EIP Prep Weekend Provides Life Road Map

EIP Prep, the college prep program for eighth graders preparing for high school, kicked off its year by having students spend the day with Rubin and Valerie Cuffee of RuVal, Inc.. All of the EIP’s 8th grade students attended two workshops facilitated by the Cuffees: “An Overview of Study Skills” and “Goal Setting for Academic Success.” Students identified their learning styles, honed their listening skills, improved note taking and memory, and identified good study locations. During the sessions, students focused on identifying their goals, practicing effective techniques in setting realistic goals, writing action plans to help them achieve their goals, and finally illustrating a Life Road Map to envision where all of the goal setting and planning will one day take them. Eighth grade isn’t too early to start!

On October 2, over 150 8th grade EIP Prep students visited George Mason University to learn the importance of goal setting and study skills. Students showed a great deal of enthusiasm as they got off the buses, ready to meet new peers and engage in meaningful workshops and discussions that will equip them with the necessary tools to be successful throughout the school year and in college.
Several students expressed their gratitude and all felt that the presenters, Rubin and Valerie Cuffee, were extremely knowledgeable about their particular subject. One student said, “This workshop is perfect and very inspiring. I can’t wait to come back again.” Another student said, “I learned that setting goals is important in life, and that goals will guide you to more achievements.”
